in payment of debts he had contracted but I have not yet been able
to pass any.
I have sold all the Tobacco Notes @ £50 p Ct & could dispose
of any quantity you could send me before the Month expires to pay
the assessmt, after which time I am afraid they will not sell so well
as most people think (& believe justly) that the Tobacco that will
be paid into the Treasury will be the very worst in the State
P. S. I can get a very considerable quantity of Ship Bread to
purchase if wanted.

[Henry Jackson, Somerset Coty to Gov. Lee]
Sir I send this to Talbot Court House where I expect it will meet
with a ready conveyance to Annapolis to acknowledge the Rect of
your Excellency's sundry Letters of the 21, 22 & 28 of Aug. since
w'ch I expected by some oppty to receive a supply of the new money,
in my opinion it will always greatly aid the Purchase to have some
Cash in hand to distribute among those whose wants are most press-
ing & as I am apprehensive the Holders of the articles I am author-
ized to Purchase Particularly Cattle will not for the new money
Part with more than will discharge the Public Demand on them at
Present, it wou'd tend to the Public advantage for me to have a Sum
of the Present Circulating money to give to such as made it a matter
of choice, as well as to such whose necessitys require it. I cant with
Precision say what quantity of cattle I shall be able to Procure but
expect from 50 to 100 Head, I cou'd wish if it is approved of to have
Cash in the Present circulating money for half the Value by orders
on the Lieutenant or Collectors of the Tax in the County & to be
supplyed with some of the new money as soon as Possible.
I have now 2744tt Bacon & 19 Barrs Pork wch I expect to forward
this week to Annapolis, if our Streights are clear of the Enemy, but
that has not been the case lately, it woud be attended with a very
heavy expence to Transport it to Cambridge by Land Carriage, but
that must be Submitted to if it cant be sent from hence by water with
Safety.
I have not received a Single Shilling of Money nor a Pound of
Tobacco on Loan to the State & I believe all the other Gentlemen ap-
pointed are in the same Predicament
The people of this County will derive no advantage from the pay-
ment of wheat to the Lieutenants for the 15 p Ct in General very
little wheat is made in this county, this year less than ever & little
or none for Sale
The Commissioners of the Tax proceeded to the Appointment of
Inspectors on the 10th Augt wch was delivered to the Sheriff a few
days after to forward to your Excellency the Inspectors warrants
are not yet come down, I am afraid we shall not have an oppty af-
