[George Dashiell, Somerset County, to Gov. Lee]
Sir Your favr of the 29th June came to hand the 9th Ulto by
Doctr Winder I have appointed a meeting of the officers on Satur-
day next for the purpose of making an Account of the Arms Accou-
trements and Ammunition in this County belonging to the States,
And Shall take particular care to return it to you by the first opper-
tunity. I shall be carefull to have the Arms repaired and cleaned
immediately.

May It Please Your Excellency, I Received your Letter Dated
the 29th Ulto and have Herewith Transmitted you a Return of the
Camp Utensils Arms Ammunition &c, under my Care, have pul
Four men to Work Imediately on the Receipt of your Letter Clean-
ing & Repairing the Arms that are Deficient one of which I pay
60 Dollars one 45 Dollars and Two 40 Dollars Each pr Day. I
Expect to have the Whole of the Guns Cleaned that will be Fit for
Service and put in Good order in About one Month.
I have Examined the stores at Fort Whetstone Point Cannot Find
any that may be sold (as Useless as Long as the Cannon are Kept)
Except the Brimstone a Fishing Seine @ 74 Bbrl Salt Petre the
Spare Carriages and Cariage Wheels and the Spears for Defending
the Works Agreeable to the Return Delivered in and Some old Iron,
There is 9 or 10 Pieces of Large Hewed White Oak Timber at the
Fort which was got for Building a Powder Magazine and a Parcell
of b tone which Majr N. Smith says he is Intiled to and Claims as
his Property some of the Stone he has Already Taken away and
Converted to his Own Use he says he Never made a Charge for the
Timber it was Cut on his Land and the Stone also Raised By the
Soldiers on his Land.
I have Inclosed you an Acct of the Cannon &c Delivered Mr Hugh
Young He is Desirous of Having the Charge made out Against him
so that he may pay it (Which he says he will on Demand) and be
Enabled to Settle with the Different Owners of the Vessel, he De-
sired me to mention that Colo Jno Dorsey had some Cannon of the
same Demensions about the Time he Received these and was
Charged only £2400 pr piece
If your Excellency may think Proper shall Esteem it a Particular
Favour to Grant one an Order on Mr Young for Part or the Whole
amount, or send me up some Money to Enable me to pay the Work-
men I have Imployed Cleaning the Arms and for my own Support
As I have Long Since Exhausted all my Small Stocks and am Now
in the Greatest Necessity for the Want of Money
