p. 108

By the Upper House of Assembly 19 March 1745
Gentlemen
Agreeable to Our Address and the Address of Your House to the
Governor (which his Excellency has been pleased to lay before Us)
We have signed an Association Which We now send that it may be
also Signed by the several Members of Your House
Signed p Order J Ross Cl Up Ho.
Whereas a most Unnatural Rebellion hath been and as We fear
is still carryed on in Great Britain in favour of a Popish Pretender,
educated in the Bigotry and Superstition of the Church of Rome and
trained up in the Arbitrary Principles of the Courts of France and
Spain by whose Councils and Supplies his Cause is governed and
supported
And Whereas It cannot be doubted but that the French seated
on the River Canada in pursuance of the same pernicious Designs
will take all Occasions of annoying his Majestys Subjects either
by exciting the Indians or making Incursions into this or some other
of the Neighbouring Colonies
We whose Names are hereunto subscribed the Governor and
the Members of the Upper and Lower Houses of the Assembly of
the Province of Maryland at this time Convened being truly sensible
of that inestimable Happiness which his Majestys Subjects enjoy
in the full and free Possession of their Religion Liberties and Prop-
erties under his most sacred Majesty King George the second do
hold Ourselves bound by all the Ties of Loyalty and Duty and Grati-
tude as well to declare Our Abhorrence of this detestable Rebellion
as also Our firm and unavoidable Attachment to Our most Gracious
Sovereign and his Government But as by Our Distance We cannot
hope for an Opportunity of manifesting the sincerity of these our
Dutiful Professions by any immediate Service to his sacred Person
We therefore do solemnly Promise and hereby engage Ourselves to
stand by each other and to the utmost of Our Power and Ability to
defend his Majestys Rights his Royal Authority and Govt not only
against the attempts of his Avowed Enemies but against any wicked
Machinations of concealed Traytors to their King and Country
This Engagement We solemnly and willingly enter into to mani-
fest Our Gratitude to the best of Sovereigns Our Love to Our Coun-
try and its Liberties and Our Detestation of Popery and Slavish
Principles of that superstitious Religion
Adjourned till three of the Clock in the Afternoon
