We return your Lordship our most humble and hearty thanks
for your kind Speech at the opening of this Session wherein your
Lordship is pleased as well to Express a Generous Concern for the
great Difficulties which this Province hath Laboured under Occa-
sioned by the Unhappy State of its Trade as to Perswade us by the
most forceable Arguments to Endeavour the removall of the Evills
under which our Country has Groaned.
The Honour of the Legislature and the good of the People We
represent are motives Sufficient if any (can be so) to Excite us to
Embrace the present (we hope) happy Opportunity to Establish our
Trade upon a good foundation And we are Determined so to behave
ourselves in the Discharge of a Duty so Essential to the good of our
Country as to Answer the Expectations of the People we represent
to the Utmost of our power.
We will take the State of the Goals into our Consideration and
Endeavour to redress what is Amiss with regard to them and make
such Amendments to the Act for regulating the Militia as may be
found Necessary to render it more Useful for the Defence of the
Province for we are Convinced that nothing can so Effectually pre-
serve property as being in a Posture to Defend it.
May it please yr Lordship.
We want words to Express the gratful Sense we have of the
obligations your faith full Tenants are under to you for undertaking
so fatiguing & Hazardous a Voyage with so Generous & Worthy a
purpose as promoting the welfare of this your Province and for the
Assurance Your Lordship has been pleased to give us that you will
readily Concur in any thing that may Answer that End; Such an
Assurance from your Lordship cannot but fill our hearts with the
greatest Joy and must give us the Greatest hopes that your Lordship
your Noble Family and your Tenants will derive lasting Advantages
from your Lordships coming into your Province And we hope and
trust it will Excite an Emulation in people of all Conditions to
Serve their Country faithfully in their respective Stations, to behave
themselves with the greatest Loyalty to his Sacred Majesty King
George the best of Princis, and with the greatest Duty Affection &
Gratitude to your Lordship the best of Proprietary's.
