346 Assembly Proceedings, March 19, 1735/6-April 10, 1736.

Read the first time in this house & Ordered to lye on the Table.
Ordered that the Bill for the further restraining the Evil & fraudu-
lent Practise of Sheriffs be read a second time this Day fortnight
Read the second time the Bill Entituled an Act to alter the Times
for holding the Assizes and Provincial Courts and to appoint the
said Courts to be held at the times therein mentioned, passed & sent
by Edmund Jenings Esqr
Read the second time the Bill Entituled an Act to prevent false
packing of Tobacco and concerning the Tare of Tobacco hhds passed
and sent by George Plater Esqr
Adjourned till two of the Clock in the Afternoon

This house met again according to Adjournment

Michael Howard Esqr from the Committee relating to the fur-
ther restraining the Evil Practices of Sheriffs brings in the following
Report.
At a Conference appointed by the Upper and Lower houses of
Assembly April 3d 1736

Who make Choice of Michael Howard Esqr as Chairman and Wil-
liam Rogers Clerk, and proceed to agree to the following heads of a
Bill.
That an Explanatory Bill to the Act for emitting &c. be drawn
and brought in obliging the several Sheriffs to lodge an Acct upon
Oath by the twentieth Day of April yearly of what money they have
received from the Inhabitants of their County or Other Person pay-
ing Tax therein, in Discharge of their publick or County Levy with
the Clerk of the County Court for the Inspection of any Person that
shall apply for the same, in Order that an Apportion be made thereon
giving a Reward to the Sheriff and Clerk for their Trouble
That all Parish taxes to be raised and levyed for the future be
lyable to be paid in Current money as the Publick and County Levy is.
That the Persons having Claims in the Publick or County be
obliged to receive their Proportion of the Sheriff according to the
Account by him rendered
