Present as in the morning

The following Message is sent to the Lower House by Philip
Lee Esqr

By the Upper House of Assembly 16th April 1735
Gentlemen
In answer to your Message of 15th Instant by Mrs Hooper & Mat-
thews we assure you that with great Concern we observe the diffi-
culties the Inhabitants of this Province labour under in the paymt of
their Quit Rents to his Ldship & we heartily wish the late lower
House of Assembly had better considered the advantages they re-
ceived from the Revenue Law then in Being and which might have
been Still preserved if it had been accepted by that House for the
Term of three years as it was offered
As this House is Sensible of the present general Calamity of the
good People of this Province occasioned by the Loss of that Law a

Law which we may justly affirm was one of the best we ever had so we
are and always shall be ready to Join with your house in any expe-
dient that can be thought of to give Relief in this Case but it seems
reasonable to this House that before any Address be prepared to
present to his Ldship on this occasion Some measures ought to be
considered of to raise an Equivalent for his Rents otherwise it will
be an Address without any Solid Foundation and a Proposal of a
payment to be made his Lordship instead of his Rents without any
thing to pay them withall these previous Requisites being performed
this House will be ready to Join with your House in any Address
that shall be thought proper to obtain the desired Effect

Mrs George and Johnson from the Lower House attend with Col
Jno Ward a member Elected for Cecil County in the room of Col
Ephraim Augustin Herman decd in order to see him qualifyed who
takes the Oaths to the Governmt appointed to be taken by Act of
Assembly and Subscribes the Abjuration & Test & then withdrew.
An Engrossed Bill from the Lower House by Mrs Hawkins &
Edmondson entituled an Act impowering the Rector Vestrymen &
Church Wardens of King and Queen Parish in St Mary's & Charles
County's to purchase two Acres of Land in the said Parish in St
Mary's County to build a Church on and for raising a fund as well
to compleat the sd purchase & Building as to repair Newport Church
