Read the Bill for Advanceing the Staple of this Province
upon which the following Message was prepared viz.

By the Upper House of Assembly July the 21st 1726
Gentlemen.
On reading the Bill prepared by your House for Advance-
ing the Staple of this province we are of Opinion that it is
now too late to Cut up part of the present Crop (which is
not likely to be great) the people having hitherto spent their
time and labour in tending it and are not at all prepared to
Employ themselves or Servants in any other Business that
will be Advantageous to them the remaining part of the year,
and therefore cannot Consent to that part of the bill We
are likewise of opinion that the Deduction of one third part
of all Debts (and ffees) sensibly affects Trade and therefore
ought not to be in force so soon, besides it is too much and
does not bear a just proportion to the Quantity of Tobacco
that will be made less then usuall by the Restriction in that
bill There are some other things which we think wants
amendments in it, it is too tedious to be reconciled by Mes-
sages and therefore desire a Conference with some of the

members of your house such as you think fit to appoint on the
Subject matter therein Contained
Signed p Order Geo. Plater, Cl Up Ho.
