An Ordinance for quieting and settling the Differences and
Disputes among the Inhabitants of Baltimore County.
Forasmuch as many Differences and Disputes have hap-
pened in the County of Baltimore relating to the Building
a Court House at Joppa the charge whereof some of the
Inhabitants of that County complain is unjustly levyed and to
be levyed on them and this General Assembly having thought
fit to settle that County Court House at Joppa and the Agree-
ment made by the Justices of that County with the Undertaker
or Builder of that House to be laid before them at their next
Meeting: And that in the mean Time no more Tobacco shall
be levyed on the Inhabitants of that County towards the Build-
ing of that House —
It is therefore ordained by the Council and Assembly of this
Province that the Justices of Baltimore County do not on any
Pretence whatsoever directly or indirectly levy or cause to be
levyed or assessed on any the Inhabitants of that County any
more Tobacco than what is already assessed for and towards
the Paymt for the Building the said Court House and that
Colo James Maxwell the Undertaker of that Work do at the
first Meeting of the House of Delegates in the next Session
of Assembly lay before that House the Agreement made
between him and the Justices of Baltimore County for building
that Court House and that all Persons whatsoever within the
said County do forbear and desist from raising promoting or
prosecuting any Heats, Debates, Reflections or Disturbances
among the Inhabitants of that County touching the late Dis-
satisfactions relating to the said Court House whereof all
Persons are to take Notice and conform themselves to this
Ordinance on Pain of incurring the Displeasure of this Assem-
bly and being prosecuted according to Law
