An Act relating to the Standard of English Weights and
Measures

Whereas there is now a Standard of Weights and Measures
agreeable to the Standard of Weights and Measures in her
Majestys Exchequer in England settled with in the severall
Countys of this Province.
Be it enacted by the Queens most excellent Majesty by and
with the Advice and Consent of her Majestys Governour
Councill and Assembly of this Province and the Authority of the
same that all persons whether Inhabitants or fforeigners shall
repair and bring their Stillards with which they weigh and
receive their Tobacco to the Standard yearly and every year
to be tryed Stamp'd and Numbred for which they are to pay
to the person keeping the Standard One shill for every time
such Stillards shall be tryed and stampt as aforesaid And every
person or persons that shall have their Bushell half Bushell
peck Gallon bottle Quart and pint if they make use of the same
or any of them in buying or selling by tryed and Stampt at the
Standard aforesaid Except such of the Measures aforesaid as
come out of England and are there Stampt for wch they shall pay
for the Stamping the aforesaid Measures Six pence apiece.
And whosoever shall presume to sell by any dry Measures
without first having the said Measures tryed and Stampt at the
Standard shall forfeit the Sume of ffive hundred pounds of
Tobacco.
And whosoever likewise shall presume to weigh and receive
Tobacco by stillards have not within one year past from such
weighing and receiving been try'd and Stampt at the Standard
shall forfeit One thousand pounds of Tobacco The one half of
which {forfeitures to be to her Majesty her heires and Succes-
sors towards the Defraying the Charge of the County where
the Offender shall dwell or Reside And the other half to the
Informer or Informers to be recovered in any Court of Record
of this Province by bill plaint or Information wherein no Essoyn
proteccon or Wager of Law to be allowed.
And if any Person or Persons shall refuse to pay any Tobacco

or by such Stillards try'd and Stamp'd as aforesaid and shall
thereby compell the Owner to have them try'd over again
within the year If the Stillards are true such person so refusing
or compelling as aforesaid shall pay for the new Stamping but
if not the Owners of the Stillards to pay for the same.
