8 An Act for the more Speedy Conveying of Publiq Letters and
Pacquetts of this Province and Defraying the Charge thereof.

Forasmuch as severall of the Inhabitants of this Province
have been formerly Subject to great and Manifest Incon-
veniencys by reason of pressing of Horses under pretext of
Carrying and Conveying of Publiq Letters and Pacquetts for
prevention whereof and that due Care may be taken for the
future that all Publiq Letters and Pacquetts relating to her
Majesty or the Publiq Service of this Province be securely and
expeditiously Conveyed according to their Directions the Dele-
gates of this Present Generall Assembly do pray that it may
be Enacted and
Be it enacted by the Queens most Excellent Majesty by and
with the Advice and Consent of her Majestys Governour
Councill and Assembly of this Province and the Authority of
the same. That the Sheriff of each respective County is hereby
injoyn'd and Commanded to take care of all publiq Letters
and Pacquetts and expeditiously to convey them according to
their Directions to the next Sheriff or Undersheriff of the
Adjacent County. And for the Encouragement of the Severall
and respective Sheriffs and their Diligence in their Conveying
such Publiq Letters and Pacquetts That they may be allowed
the severall Summs hereafter exprest to be laid in the publiq
Levy of this Province viz. To the Sheriff of Ann Arundell
County — fifteen hundred pounds of Tobacco who is hereby
obliged to Convey all such Letters and pacquetts as are directed
and must go over to the Eastern Shore to Kent Island and
there to be Delivered to the Sheriff of Talbot County or his
Deputy To the Sheriff of Talbot County fifteen hundred
pounds of Tobacco who is hereby also obliged to Convey all such
Letters and Pacquetts as are directed to the Port of Annapolis
to the said port To the Sheriff of Kent County eight hundred
pounds of Tobacco who is also hereby obliged to Convey all
such Letters and Pacquetts as are directed to the Port of

Annapolis to Kent Island and deliver them to the Sheriff or
Undersheriff of Talbot County Except he convey them a more
ready and expeditious Way to Annapolis who is also hereby
obliged to Convey all such Letters and Pacquetts to the Port
of Annapolis as aforesaid To the Sheriff of Cecill County one
thousand pounds of Tobacco who is allso Obliged to convey
all such Letters and Pacquetts as are directed to the North
