                  86    Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1700.

             

              Lib. x.   not further treat with them but leaves them to take their

                   own Measures

                     They answer that the Indians have a good heart & will do

                   no Prejudice to any body that does not hurt them & desire his

                   Excellency not to believe any Writing against them

                     His Excellency assure them that he will always have two

                   Ears one for the English & one for the Indians

                     His Excellency tells the Emperor of Piscattoway that in case

                   his Indians are refractory & will not be kept within Bounds &

              p. 235    Measures but do such irregular Things as will be Offensive so

                   that he cannot rule to send them to him who has 20000 Men

                   under his Command & he will punish them

                     The Emperor asks if he shall come to live at Accokick or

                   Pamunckey to which it is answered he may at either of them

                   which he likes best & that he shall be well used for that his

                   Excellency will take care the next Assembly to have an ordi

                   nance made for their quiet & ease so that no Body shall come

                   to disturb them in their Lands or any thing belonging to them

                   & as to the Emperor for Building his house he is directed to

                   apply to the Assembly by sending some of his men when the

                   General Assembly sitt

                     The Indians complain that the English cutt their ‘Traps in

                   Pieces and hinder their hunting his Excellency says he will

                   take care for the future to prevent that

                     They are told of their Breach of Articles and asked if they

                   are desirous for to enter into new ones to which they say they are

                     And it being concluded & agreed upon that the Empr should

                   with his wife & Children within two months Come in & Live

                   at Pamunckey & do his utmost endeavours to perswade the

                   rest of the Indians to do so likewise

                     Ordered that Articles of peace be prepared with the Agree

                   ment last mentioned incerted & in all other Points as they were

                   before

                     Ordered also that Articles of peace be prepared for the

                   Pamunckey Indians

                p. 236 And then his Excellency was pleased to give every one of

                   the said Indians presents, & of greater Value to Colo James for

                   his Mistress the Queen of Pamunckey & to the Emperor

                   Ondauxon King Peter & others of Greater Note

                     And then told them to come again to morrow morning to

                   sign the said Articles of peace

             

             

             

                           Tuesday April 9th 1700

             

                     His Excellency the Governor & the Indians again mett &

                   were present as before
