566 Appendix to Council Proceedings, 1696— 1729.
B. M. man about Sunday last was a sennight & tht at the sd Gosses Vol. 25. funerail one Capt. Snead a magistrate of tht place had stab'd
a man as he was standing upon his guard and defending himself from four or five men that assaulted him there. That there lyes a great ship betwixt Upland and Philadel phia say'd to be mounted with thirty-six guns, wch this Inform ant says brought in a great many servants but very few Goods for wch he had Cocquets as this Informant was told by Mr Vanderheyden & some others who reported likewise that they believed the sd ship had brought in more Goods by reason she stay'd some time below before she came up into those parts where it is imagined she might put the same on shore. The sd Informant further sayth that he heard it credibly reported there were a great many Privateers up and down the Governmt of Pensilvania & that two of them had lately broke out of Philadelphia Goale, which were supposed to be of Capt. Every's crew. That as he travelled through Pensilvania & the Jerseys to N. York great inquiry was made of him (understanding he was sent by his EXnCY Sir Edmd Andros his Mates Governr of Virga upon an Express) whether or noe he brought any orders concerning the Privateers or if the Privateers were taken up in Virga Taken before his Exncy the Gov- ernr at the Port of Annapolis the Hen. Denton, Cl. Concil, first day of July, anno 1697.
By his EXnCY the Governr &ca July the 1st 1697. Upon credible Information this day rec'd how that a great many Privateers and Pyrates lay sheltering up and down the Province of Pennsylvania whereby Encouragemt is not only given to the looser sort of seamen and servants of the adja cent Governmts to run to them, but are also protected, har boured, aided & assisted by open force and violence among them, as well seamen belonging to his Mates men of warr as mercht men dayly committing severall violences and outrages to the very great disservice of his Maty and damage of his subjects and forasmuch as it is supposed they may have some design on foot so soon as an Opertunity offers to effect it, whereby the frontier parts of this his Mates Province lay equally exposed to hazard with those of Pensilvania: Ordered therefore that public and speedy notice be given to all officers military and civill belonging to Caecill County within this Ma't's Province of Maryland and all masters of ships riding in those parts that they be upon their guard and take particular care (more especially the Sheriff) to prevent
