Appendix to Council Proceedings, 1696-1729. 565
Gaole we desired Capt. Markham to put them on board a B. M. Vessell that was bound to the Fleet to send them on board the Vol. 25. Commodore, knowing they were runaway from the Fleet, but he would not. We fin'd thm five pds each for their Riot and to remain in prison till they pay'd it, thinking tht might have made them have been willing to have gone, but instead of that Capt. Markham forgave thm their fyne and set them at liberty, they and many more went through the Countrey up and down braging of their Triumph. Yor Excy writt to Mr Francis Jones when to me when here and mentioned me in it, which he like a villian gave to Capt. Markham's Clarke Clapole, to shoe him, wch he did, they would have taken a copy of it, he told them they might keep the Originall like a Rascall. I have heard how kind yor Exncy hath been to him Capt. Mark ham has put me out of Commission tht the Pirates might have more liberty & now they walk the streets as impudently as ever in defiance I am very glad of being eas'd but sorry I can not serve the King any further at present. Sr, I gave Coll. Quarry an Accot at large by the last Fleet but I fear Mr Plator gave our pacquett to Jones. When yor Exncy pleases to honr me with a line let it be by a safe hand, yor may assure yourself I will never write anything but what I will prove. I hope God and our Sove raign the King will direct us that we may be govern'd better for their Glory & Honr is the prayers of yor Exncy's most obe dient faithfull and humble servant to command These are true Coppys Robt Snead. [signed:] Fr. Nicholson.
