At a Meeting between the Governors of Maryland and Lib. X. Pennsylvania held at Colo Hynsons House the 28th day of Octobci- 1718 Present
His Excellency Colo Hart The honble Wm Keith Esqr Governors Colo Thomas Smith Colo Nath Hynson Colo John French Major Iames Harris His Excellency Colo Hart produced several Complaints which had been made to him from the Magistrates and others p. 72 of Cecil County in Maryland relating to the settlement at Nottingham and they claiming the said settlement to be within the Jurisdiction of Maryland it was Observed that Governor Keith in his last Commission of the peace for the County of Chester in pennsylvania had appointed Magistrates for the Township of Nottingham on supposition that the said Town ship was within the Jurisdiction of the said County of Chester his Excellency therefore in Behalf of my Lord Baltimore and in defence of his Lordships just right sets forth that the said Township of Nottingham had frequently been taxed by the Magistrates of Cecil County that a Great part of the Inhabi tants of Nottingham had petitioned him to take them under the protection of my Lord Baltimores Government and that as he was really convinced from several Records and other proofs that the Scituation of Nottingham aforesd was unques tionably within the Bounds of my Lords Grant from the Crown he could not but insist upon it that Governor Keith would be pleased to withdraw his said Commission for Justices of the peace at Nottingham and all other Marks of Jurisdic tion of pennsylvania there Colo French who from his long Residence in that Neighbourhood was perfectly well acquaint ed with the Settlement at Nottingham said that about sixteen years ago the said Settlement was by proprietor Pens Order Surveyed and laid out into Lots four of which he had reserv'd to himself and Granted most of the rest to the Respective setlers by regular warrants which was the only pretence of right whereby they now hold them that they had always from the Beginning of their Settlement sued and had been sued as p. 73 Inhabitants of the County of Chester in Pennsylvania and that until the Great dispute about the Division Line between my Lord Baltimore and Mr Pen could be perfectly adjusted he humbly Conceived there was only one Rule to be tacitly observ'd in the mean time in order to preserve the publick peace and make all parties easy (vizt) that wheresoever per-
