It was after this the Justices of Cecil County took Occasion p. 70 to extend the Claims of their County and to lay their Taxes on the pennsylvanians setled at Nottingham but the people Conscious of their being seated there by sufficient rights from Mr Pen with due Caution to keep to the Northward of all former Maryland Claims according to the Lord Baltimores own fixed Bounds and determination they could not on pre tences merely taken from the above mentioned false and par tial Observations be perswaded to quit their rights and sue for new Titles to others whose right of Granting them ap peared at best not to be less disputable During these disputes several Letters pass'd between Mr Pens Commissioners of property and the late Mr Charles Carrol Agent for Maryland and for preventing all misunder standings and to preserve peace and Good Neighbourhood until such time as the Line in dispute could be mutually agreed upon and setled by both proprietaries the pennsylva nia Commissioners assured Mr Carrol not only that they never had Granted but even Obliged themselves not to grant with their Knowledge any Lands to the Southward of the aforesaid Line run by the late Charles Lord Baltimore him self and it was purely in order to keep and preserve this promise that Colo French of New Castle some time last spring was directed without Instruments Chain Hatchet or the least Mark of any Intention to Survey as the Justices of Cecil County faisly alledged to walk with one other single person along with him only with a Compass in their Hand from the mouth of the River Octararoe aforesaid Eastward so that from p. 71 the said Colo French's Report the Comms might be with more Certainty enabled to perform exactly their promise made to Mr Carrol as aforesaid On the other hand in the year 1718 some persons thô of Rank in Maryland yet being led intirely by Gain without any Regard to Iustice or the publick peace did take upon them actually to make Surveys of very considerable Tracts of Land as high at most as Conestogoe in the province of pennsylva nia and above thirty miles North of all former Claims of Maryland of which Complaint having been made to Colo John Hart then Governor of Maryland and his Excellency having likewise Complained of some Regulations which had been made amongst the pennsylvanians at Nottingham by William Keith Esqr Governor of that province an interview was ap pointed between both the Governors at Colo Hynsons House upon the Eastern Shore in Maryland where they met accord ingly towards the latter end of October and the Minute of that Conference taken by Consent of both parties is as follows
