X.Friday November the 2d 1722 Present the same as Yesterday The evil Consequences of the Shuanuo Indians entertain ing our Runaway Negro Slaves having been represented to the Board it is thought proper to prevent those evil Conse quences for the future to invite the said Shuanuo Indians into a treaty of Friendship and Amity with this Government and to the Intent that these Resolutions be put in practice as soon as possible Charles Anderson an Indian Trader then in Town by Order of the Governor and Council was sent for and on his appearing the following instructions were Given him in Writing vizt
Instructions for Charles Anderson who is hereby Irnpowred and Authorised by the Governor and Council to treat with P. 52 the Shawans Indians for entring into Articles of Friendship and Amity with them and for their surrendering up to this Government certain Negro Slaves who for some time past have been entertaIn'd at their Towns upon Potomack River
Imprimis. You Charles Anderson by the appointmt of the Governor and Council of this province are to repair unto the Shawan Town upon Potomack with all Convenient speed and there to call together Pockaseta and Oneakoopa and make them the present to each of them of a Stroud Match Coat and a pair of Silk Stockings on Behalf of the Lord Baltimore and Charles Calvert Esqr present Governor of this province as a token of their Love and Friendship for their Nation of Indians and as an Earnest of our desire to live with them as Friends and Brethren which we shall be willing to demonstrate to them by further presents to be made to themselves and their other great men when they shall come down to see our Governor at Annapolis and there enter into such Articles of peace and friendship as shall be thought necessary for creating a Good Correspondency between this Government and the Shawan Indians who will find our Governor to be ready to shew him self a Friend & Brother to them 2 If those Indians will receive the presents and promise to come down to Annapolis and enter into such Articles of peace as are above proposed that then you appoint the mid dle of the month of April to be the time that the Governor and Council will be ready at Annapolis to receive them as Friends and Brethren to make such Articles of peace and p. 53 Friendship as shall be thought necessary for laying the
