          Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1722. 391

    

     James did in Consideration of five Pounds in hand paid a      Lib. X.

     Horse Bridle and Saddle and two Suits of Cloaths, indent to

     live with him the said Andrews as a Servant for the term of

     thirty years and that he sold the said James to a Gentleman

     in Philadelphia named Nicholas (his Sir Name he dos not re

     member) for the sum of fifteen pounds, the said Andrews

     further says that it is a Customary thing in Ackamack

     in Virginia for the Indians to work among the Inhabitants

     and to indent with them for a Time or Term of years, and

     that he had indented with the said James in Virginia not in

     Maryland, and that he did not then nor does he yet know

     whether the said Indian Boy belonged to the Indian Congee

     who claimed him or not

       And it appearing to this honble Board that he the said

     Andrews since his Commitment had not only Satisfied the

     said Indian Congee but also the King and chief men of the

     nation to whom the said Indian Boy did Belong and also that

     he had already suffered upwards of three Months Imprison

     ment it is their Opinion that the said Andrews be dealt the    p. 48

     more mildly with therefore

       Resolved by the Governor and Council present that the

     said Marcus Andrews be fined for his Offence afd in the sum

     of five hundred pounds of Tobacco to his Lordships use and

     imprisoned in the publick prison at Annapolis for the space

     of one day and the said Andrews is accordingly Committed to

     the Custody of the Sheriff of Ann Arundell County

       Memd these proceedings to be laid before the next Council

     there being but few of the Council present

    

    

    

       At a Council held in the Council Chamber at Annapolis on

     Thursday October 11th 1722

      According to a Resolution of Council held at Annapolis in

     the Council Chamber the 18th day of July last past the pro-

     ceedings of the said Council being laid before this honble
