110 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1700.
Lib. H. D. Instructions, with your own Particular Observations upon the Character of each person. The Acts of the General Assembly of that Province that you have lately Transmitted to us are now in the hand of Mr Attorney Genll for his Opinion thereupon in Point of Law, And that for Religion being amongst the rest, when they come Back to us, whatsoever has been Alledged either by your Selfe or by the Councill of Maryland in their Letter to us upon That Subject, shal be duly Considered. In the mean while upon this Occasion of Acts lying either wth the Attorney or Solicitor Genll you will do well to take Notice That it will be for the Service of the Province, that an Agent p. 177 be Constituted with Authority and Instructions from thence to Solicite the Dispatch of that and all other Publick business wherein the Province is Concerned the Charge need not be great. It is a thing done by most of the Plantacons and proves very Usefull to them. We shall Expect your Answer to what we write you about a Trade with the Western Indians, and whatever else you can Suggest on that Subject after you have had the Meeting which you Intend with the Earle of Bellamont. You have done well in Transmitting to us Copys of what you Sent to Mr Secretary Vernon, relating to Capt Munday, and we desire you to Send the like Copies of whatsoever you shall write to other Offices, upon Such publick Occasions for the future, Tho there may be many things Sent to us in this Manner, upon wch it is not proper for us to give Directions yet the whole is very Necessary for our Information; We Acquainted the Lords of the Treasury with the Account you give of the Pyrates Effects in your hands, and doubt not but if you have not already you will have due Orders for the disposal thereof. We Observe what you write about the Proposalls made by the Assembly for paying the publick Leavie in Money; But forbear returning any Answer att present So Material a Change requiring Consideration. P. 178 We desire you (as we shall do the Governors of all his Matys other Plantations respectively) That a Memorandum be Entred upon the Councill Books to Caution the said Coun cill that whenever the Governmt of Maryland by the Death Absence or Removall of a Governor or Lievt Governor, Ime diatly Commissioned by his Maty comes to devolve upon a President and the Councill of the Said Province The Said President and Council do forbear to pass any Acts, but Such as are Imediatly necessary for the Peace and Welfare of the
