At a Council held at Mount Calvert on Thursday the Lib. X eighteenth day of July in the Eleventh year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord William the third by the grace of God of England Scotland France and Ireland Defender of the Faith &Ca Annoq Dni 1700
Present His Excy Nath Blakiston Esqr Capt Genl Collo Henry Iowles Tho Brooke Esqfl of the honble Collo Iohn Addison Collo Ino Hamd the Collo John Courts Tho Tasker Esqr Council His Excellency acquaints the Board that the Occasion of his now calling them together is that upon the late cruel & in human murder in Virginia he was obliged to appoint some p. 216 rangers upon the Frontiers of Potomack & not only to Con- suit with them but also the committee of the house of Dele gates who he had summoned to meet here at this time ac cording to the directions of the act of Assembly appointing the said Committee &Ca & to consult the safety of the Province either in keeping out the Rangers now appointed being six & an Officer or raising more or otherwise as the Board & Com mittee shall advise upon which mature & deliberate consider ation being had advised that Protection be given to the In habitants seated on Potomack & that one other Ranger be added so that they may Range by four at a time & that they keep out until such time as his Excy shall think fit to call them in His Excellency is pleased to send for the Comittee for de ciding differences between the english and Indians who came V1Zt
of the Capt Richard Hill Mr Waiter Smith Com- Mr James Sanders Mr Elisha Hall mit- Mr John Worthington Capt Philp Hoskins tee Mr James Hutchison & Mr Tho Greenfield Mr Benja Hall Read his Excellencys order to Captain Philip Hoskins & Major William Dent to go to the Indians & enquire for the murtherers & their answer to his Excellencys order by which no certainty could be Gathered who had committed that Bar barous act Further advised that in case any necessity should appear to appoint any Rangers upon Elk Ridge that his Excellency p 266 would be pleased to put on four Rangers there with the trouble of the Council or Committee Then taken into Consideration about the Indian Fort upon the Island of Potomack & whether a Message shall be sent to those Indians to come in or not Voted in the Negative
