tions Letter and the observations thereon being here read it
is by the House answered as followeth viz —

As to the first and second observations

Wherein it is said they assume to themselves a Power to make
Laws &c & such Laws as they Enact they refuse to send home
This House say they know no such Thing

Relating to Appeals &c

It is acknowledged by this House that in the Time of the
Proprietary Government here Appeals for England have been
denyed
As to Pyrates and illegal Traders &c.

This House say they never knew of any to be harboured
or favoured within this Province

As to raising and Lowering Coin &c.

This House saith that Pensilvania hath opportunity under
a Proprietary Governmt of advancing their Coin which hath
been found very Prejudicial to this Province, but for drawing
away servants and the People harbouring Fugitives this House
know not any such Thing done by any publick Countenance
or Authority.
Lastly. The articles for not putting themselves in a State
of Defence. This House say they find themselves in a very
good State & Condition. But as to their neighbouring Colo-
nies this House say nothing

Read the Report of Col Courts Major Dent & Capt Benja-
min Hall who were impowered to call the Vestry of King
and Queen Parish in St Mary's & Charles Countys to account
for the 40lb of Tobacco p Poll raised in that Parish since the
year 1692 as also Mr Robert Masons and Capt John Bayns
Executrices Col Lowe Col Cood and Mr Gerrard Fowlks late
Sheriffs of the said Countys.
Whereupon Ordered that the Sheriffs of St Marys and
Charles Countys Mrs Anne Bayne Executrix of Capt John
Bayne late Sheriff of Charles County Mrs Susannah Mason
Executrix of Mr Robert Mason late Sheriff of St Mary's
County Col John Cood, Col Henry Lowe and the Vestry of
the said Parish to appear before his Excellency the Governour
and Councill to render an Account of the 40lb of Tobo p poll.
Read the Petition of John Wathen complaining that the
said Vestry refused & delayed to pay him according to Agree-
ment for his work done to the church at Newport.
