not the least doubt that any crafty Inclinations will abate your
good Intentions in confirming so glorious and good an Act;

opponents to shock it again, tho their Efforts have proved
feeble hitherto yet you ought not to trust any longer, but En-
deavour to plant it firm to your Posterity which will be a most
lasting Testimonie of your virtues
I am directed by his Majesty to communicate to you his
Letter of the 19^th of January 1700 in which his Majesty has
thought it necessary for your Safetys that you give a Supply
of Six hund^d p^ds Sterl towards the building a Fortification in
the Government of New York as also a quota of Men if oc-
casion should be I need not Enforce this his Majestys Com-
mands to you with any better Arguments than that he is
pleased to signify in his Letter that your Compliance in this
will entitle you to his Royal Grace and favour
I have been some years among you and you have always
found me Strictly Just to you wherefore if I have any Credit
with you, It is my real opinion you cannot be kinder to your-
selves than in Shewing your ready Compliance with his
Majesty's Letter; for his Regards to this Province have been
very particular, and he is now about giving us a further Testi-
mony of it by taking us into his more immediate Protection
by Act of Parliament; As for the Danger of the common
Enemy, that seems to threaten us, Providence has been very
liberal in blessing us with a Prince that will vigorously in his
own Person defend us, & not appear at the Head of his Army
by Proxy as most other Princes do

Gentlemen
I have now been three years among you and must with
great Satisfaction own the good Concord we have had, and
if I have at any Time departed from that Justice, Honour, and
Integrity incumbent on me Pray upbraid me with it that I may
avoid it for the future; for I have Examined my self and am
not in the least Conscious that I ever have been wanting in my
constant Endeavours of an unbyassed Pursuit of the true In-
terest of his Majesty and the Inhabit^ts of this Province; what
other things I hold myself enjoyned to Consult you in shall be
done by way of Message as is usual.
M^r Speaker and the Members of the House took Leave
and departed
