An Act Impowering a Comittee to lay Assess & apportion
the publiq Levy for this present year Seventeen hundred
and one.

Whereas this present Generrale Assembly have for the
Defraying the Publiq Charges of this Province to this Seven-
teenth day of May Seventeen hundred and one raised a Cer-
tain Sume of Tobacco and mony amounting to the Sume of
one hundred ninety five thousand four hundred eighty one
pounds of tobacco and two hundred forty eight pounds
Seventeen shillings and four pence currant mony but by
reason more publiq Charges may arise and grow due before
the usuall and accustomed time of payment which is the tenth
day of October yearly at which time again to call and Con-
vene the whole Assembly for that occasion only considering
the great Number of them and the remoteness of their Hab-
itations from the place appointed would be very Chargeable
and troublesome to the whole Province in generall for pre-
vention whereof —
Be it enacted by the Kings most excellent Majesty by and
with the Advice and Consent of this present Generall Assem-
bly and the Authority of the same that our Burgess or Dele-
gate out of every County and one out of the City of Saint
Marys be and are hereby authorized and appoynted a Comit-

tee to Joyn with some of his Majestys Councill to lay and
equally Assess the said publiq Levy of this Province viz. Of
his Majestys honourable Councill Robert Smith Esqr and Col
John Hamond & of the house of Delegates Colo Thomas
Smithson for Talbot County George Muschamp Esqr for Saint
Marys City Colo Henry Low for Saint Marys County Major
Thomas Smith for Kent County Mr James Sanders and Mr
Samuel Young for Ann Arundell County Major Walter Smith
for Calvert County Major Wm Dent for Charles County Mr
John Hall for Baltemore County Colo John Thomas for Cecill
County Mr Thomas Greenfield for Prince Georges Coty Major
Thomas Ennalls for Dorchester County and Mr John Bozman
for Somersett County or the Major part of them be and
appear at the Town of Annapolis on the tenth day of October
next then and there to lay and assess the said Publiq Levy
already raised and also to allow levy & Assess what further
Charges may Accrew which to them shall justly appear to be

due from the publiq not exceeding Sixty thousand pounds of

tobacco more than what is already raised and likewise to
apportion order and pay out of the Publiq treasury of this
Province the Sume of three hundred pounds Currant mony
of this Province to the severall persons to whom the same
shall be due as by the Journall of the Comittee of Accounts
