         P. R. O.       [Payne's Petition.]

         To the King's most excellent Majesty

              The humble Petition of

                William Payne D.D.

        

               Chaplain in Ordinary to your Majesty

             Sheweth,

               That your Petitioner's brother John Payne Gent: was in the

             beginning of the Revolution murdered in your Majs cause and

             on your Majesty's account by the Papists in Maryland oppos

             ing your Maj: interest and Government in that Province and

             left two small children with little or no provision to the sole

             care of your Petr who hath seven of his own.

               Your Petitioner therefore humbly prays that your Majesty

             out of your Royal bounty and goodness to him & his brother's

             children will be pleased to grant to his family for their lives

             or for ever the place of Commissary for Probate of Wills and

             granting Lycences of Marriage and letters of administration

             in the said Province of Maryland to be executed by a suffi

             cient deputy.

               And your Petitioner shall ever pray

         to the Lords of the Comittee of Trade & Plantations

        

                           May 4th 1694.

        

             May it please your Ldps,

        

               Having received severall Letters from the President &

             Councill and Sir Thomas Lawrence Secretary of this their

             Majesties Province and Territory representing occasions of

             my coming to them for their Majties service, to which, and that

             I might not be waiting in the continued quiet of this place,

             I came from Virginia (where all very well) to be here by the

             tyme of this Provincial Courte appointed to sitt the 1st Tues

             day in May; when, there not being a Quorum, ‘twas adjourned

             to the next day, and Sir Thomas Lawrence delivering me their

             Majties Order in Councill of the 28th of September restoring

             him to his place of Councillor and Judge of the said Provin

             cial Courte, the same being read was ordered to be entered

             in the Council Books, to be observed accordingly, upon which
