Mr Rowland whom he took to be a Papist but does verily Lib. X. believe him to be a great Jacobite Mr Taylard Says that Mr Cood said Tho Tench Esqr who is one of his Majestys honble Council did hold Correspondency with him & always gave him an Accot of what was done in Council until such time as the said Esqr Tench was Admitted to his Excellency favour & to Sit in Council Then Came the honble Collo Henry Iowles Chancelr Mr Thomas Hatton of St Marys County appearing at the p. 67 Board saith that he is Employed by Mr Robt Mason late Sheriff of St Marys County to receive Tolo for him & that by the said Masons Order he hath paid several Quantitys of Tobacco to Mr Sly upon the said Masons Accot of which he has the Accots by him Ordered that Colonel Low Secure the said Accots and send them to Annapolis It being offered that Mr Sly had alledged that he wanted to have some Depositions against his Excllcy taken in this Gov ernment & was refused the said Mr Sly is called in & being asked says he Carried Mr Philp Clark before Collo John Courts one of his Majestys honble Council & refused to take his Deposition & that the said Clark was ready to Swear to eight of the Articles against his Excellency Thereupon his Excellency is pleased to acquaint Mr Sly that if he or any others have any thing to swear Against him they may come up to the next Provincial Court & the Iustices of that Court will take their Depositions in the face of the whole Countrey for which his Excellency will Give his Order & that they may bring their Evidences upon whose Refusal or Denial to Come, his Excellency will Order them to be Summoned, & that he does hereby order a Copy which is given the said Sly the Clk of his Majstys honble Council & the Several Clerks of any the Courts within this Province to give them any Copies of Records Gratis which the said Sly or others shall require in order to prove the Articles by them preferred against him Then was read to the said Sly a Clause in his Excellencys Letter to the right Honble the Lord Godolphin relating to him & an other Clause in his Excellencys Letter to Mr Secry Vernon Mr Sly Offers as to the Articles against his Excellency he was desired to prefer them that his Excellency might be Sen sible that he had been out of the Country a Long time & Could know but Little of them but that Mr John Cood Senr brought Copies of Several Orders of Council & Proclamations to him & that he Could not be the Author of them His Excellency is pleased to tell Mr Sly that he can give no 29
