436 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1696/7-98.
Lib. x. to Geo Plater Esqr to make Answer thereto & when any thing Recovered to see the Petitioner Satisfied Read a Duplicate of a Letter from the right honble their Lordships the Lords of the Council of trade & foreign Plantations to his Excellency the Governor of the 2d of September 1697 wherein they Require that the Laws of this Province be fairly Transcribed for their Perusall & his Majestys Royal Approbation. p. 48 Thereupon Ordered by this Board that the honble Collo Henry Iowles Chancellor Thomas Tench Esqr & Majr John Hammond take care to Employ Clarks and have the said Laws fairly Transcribed upon the Large Ruled Paper Lately sent by their Lordships for publick Business to be writt upon Recommended to the said Gentlemen that they observe what Acts of Assembly of this Province are agst Pyrates This Board observing their Lordships in their said Letter take Notice of several imperfect returns sent them do say that the reason thereof is the incapacity of the Officers here not Experienced nor heretofore used to make such Returns Also upon reading the aforesaid Letter of their said Lord- ships Ordered by this Board that the Severall Sheriffs of the Province do Straightly pursue his Excellency the Governors Proclamation upon his Grace the right Honble Charles Duke of Shrewsbury Letter to his Excellency Concerning Pyrates and Sea Robbers that they may be Detected & punished His Excellency representing to the Board that he had lately received Advice of several East India Goods late Brought to New York for which a Ship was now under Seiz- ure no legal Coquets from England Appearing for the said Goods Ordered therefore that his Majestys Collectors & Surveyrs & the Several Naval Officers within the Province do take Care & straightly Examine the several Ships that Come into their Districts for the Discovery of Such Goods George Muschamp Esqr Captain Richard Clouds & Cap tain Edmund Payne appear before this Board & being asked what they knew of Mr Sly, Mr Good Mr Clark & Mr Mason p. 49 in Relation to their indirect And evil Practices against this his Majesty Governmt Captain Clouds says that he being lately at Mr Slyes house in St Marys County in a Room where was the said Mr Sly, Mr John Cood Sent & some other persons the said Cood did pull out of his Pockett a written Paper Book and said such an one as that made a Devil of One Government & he did not doubt but that would do the same by this & that he had waited four days for an horse to wait upon the Governor at Annapolis
