432 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1696/7-98.

Produced & read a Duplicate of a Letter of the 23d of February 1697/8 from William Popple Esqr Secry to the Lords of the Committee of Trade & Plantations to his Excellency the Govr wherein the said Esqr Popple mentions a Rheam of Paper sent from their Lordships ruled with Red And that p. 44 their Lordships Direct that the Iournals & publick proceed ings of this Province be writt on such paper the said Rheam of Paper was delivered to the Clk of this Board to be lodged in the Council Office not being at Present known how it is to be made Use of Proposed att the Board that whereas there is now Occasion to send to New York to his Exclly the Lord Bellamont & Mr Iohn Perry the Post who agreed with the Assembly being lately dead his Excellency is in hopes to Agree with one Joseph Man to perform that Service for some small reward of Five or Six Pounds to which the Gentlemen are Consenting & the said Mr Man being Called Expressed his readiness therein & had Instructions given him to go on his said Iourney on Monday next Mr Philip Lynes Appearing at the Board and giving an Acct of some Extraordinary Cures lately wrought at the Cool Springs in St Marys County & that Several Poor People flocked thither to recover their healths and Limbs His Excellency the Governor is to send & give to those Poor People at the said Springs Ten Bibles there to Remain for the use of the poor people that Comes thither His Excellency also Orders that Capt James Keech and Mr Philip Lynes do provide some Sober Person to read Prayers there twice a day to whom he will give 12d p Day & is pleased to send the Person that Reads prayers there a Book of Horn ilys two Books of family Devotions & a Book of Reformed Devotions written by Dr Theophilus Dorrington out of which Books he is read to them on Sundays p. 45 Further Ordered that the said Captain Keech & Mr Lines acquaint Iohn Dent who is the Owner of the said House and Land that if he be willing his Excellency would have a read ing Desk & some Benches made in the New house there for the reader to read Prayers & the People to Sit on which by the Leave of the said Captain Dent, Captain Keech & Mr Lynes are Ordered to get made & his Excellency will pay for them His Excellency is pleased likewise to give & Allow to the said Poor People every Sunday a Mutton & as much Indian Corn as will Amount to Thirteen Shillings p Week & orders Mr Lynes to Consult Captain Keech in Order to provide the same & his Excellency will pay them for it Ordered that the Person that reads prayers at the Cool
