334 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1696/7-98.
Lib. H. D. Order that his Majestes debt due from the said Cood may (as far as Effects can be found) be answer'd; having for their further insight herewith sent the severall papers and returne made by Mr Muschamp as aforesd. And lastly the said MT Plater is hereby Ordered to cause the sd Mr Mason to be and forthwith appear before his Exncy the Governr at the Port of Annapolis wth all possible speed to answer the praemises and to come with himselfe and bring what Books of accounts or papers they shall further find as aforementioned and that Mr Wm Bladen the bearer hereof be assistant in all these matters & examine the Records of St Maries County Court to see whether any attachments have been there granted against the Estate of the sd Cood; as by the indorsement upon Mr Coods account wth the said Mr Mason is surmised; and that an account be bought of the same; that such proper Course may (for his Majesties Service) therein be taken as is fitting; and that inquiry be made what persons claime Publick Tobacco from the sd Mr Cood and what Sums of tobacco he may owe upon that account. Produced & read a Return of the sd Mr Plater & Mr Mus champ in answer to the foregoing Order as follows Vizt
November the 20th 1697. p. 609 Pursuant to an Order of his Exncy bearing date the 13th of this instant we went to the house of Mr Robt Mason and there searched and examined all the Books, papers and accounts that we could find belonging to the said Mason, but could meet wth no other papers and accounts relating to Collo Cood but such as were lately sent your EXnCY by George Muschamp the account being by us compared wth the account stated in sd Masons Bookes between himselfe and Collo Cood. But the sd Mason being disabled in his Limbs by a late fitt of the Gripes Yor Exncy Order in relation to his immediate appearance at Annapolis could not be complyed without the hazard of his life; but as to the secureing the Debts due to Cood for his Majtes use we shall take all due care therein all which is humbly submitted to by. Your Exncys most obedient Servants G Plater. G: Muschamp.
