      Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1696/7-98. 255

  

     When they have recd such a Certificate they are to send an Lib. H. D.

   abstract thereof to the Navall Officer, except they will send

   the Certificate, wch the Navall Officer is to returne to them.

     They are to acquaint the Master or Commandr to go

   immediately to the Navall Officer, who is to take care that all

   the Laws of the Kingdom of England and of this his Majestes

   Province of Maryland are complyed wth

     The Honoble Thorns Tench Esqr being sent for to go the

   Committee for laying the Publick leavy, takes leave & goes

     The Collector is to inquire of the Master or Comander

   whither he intends (God willing) from this Province, and if

   he loads according to the 25th of King Charles the Second,

   then he is to clear first wth the Navall Officer and last with his

   Majtes Collector but if he does not Load according to that Act

   he is to clear wth his Majtes Collectr and last with the Navall

   Officer.

     If a Shipp or Vessell arive from England, Wales or

   Berwick, they are to enter first wth the Navall Officer who is

   to inform them tht they are immediately to go to his Majtes

   Collectr If they bring in a Certificate & Cocquetts they are

   strictly to examine them according to the Laws of England &

   of this his Majtes Province & certyfy the same to his Majtes

   Collectr If the Collr have no objection against the Certificate

   he is to remitt it back to the Navall Officer.

     The Cocquetts are to be lodged Wth his Majtes Collr because

   his Exncy supposes tht by the Instructions of the Rtt Honoble

   the Comissrs of his Majtes Customes they are to go on board

   every Shipp and Vessell after their arrivall, and likewise

   while they stay in the Countrey and after they have clear'd,

   because the Comissrs have allowed tht Sallaryes to find them

   Boat & hands and in lieu of the halfe penny pll

     The Navall Officer is to inquire of the Master or Corn

   mandr if he Intends to Returne from the place from whence

   he came WCn if he does, he is to be acquainted that he must

   clear wth his Majestes Collectr but if he will load upon the 25th

   of King Charles the Second, then he is to clear with the

   Navall Officer & the Collectr last.

     That the Navall Officer be sure to certifye to the Collecr

   that the Shipps or Vessells he first enters have done their

   duty; and that they are not to admit any Master to enter or

   clear wth them till they have Certificate from his Majtes

   Collectr

     Ordered tht Major John Thompson Navall Officer of Cecill

   County have nothing to do wth entering or clearing any

   Shipps or Vessells coming into that County but tht they be p. 580

   entered & cleared by the Officers at Patuxent Yet notwith

   standing that he Collect the whole duty of the Tenn p Cent
