248 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1696/7-98.
Lib. H. D. Ordered that (pursuant to the advice of the Justices & Grand Jury of the Provincial Court, the Comittee for laying the publick leavy and the Gentlemen that went upon the Indian treaty) a former Ordr passed last Assembly appointing severall persons to treat Wth the Indians at the head of the P• 572 Bay, be putt in execution by the sd prsons or the Major part of them, and that they take such prson or persons to be their Interpreter or Interpreters (by them to be sworne accordingly) as they shall think fitt. And it is hereby further Ordered that the Gentlemen that go out of Caecill County acquaint the Shevanor Indians how that his Exncy never recd those presents said to be sent by Collo Herman. Vpon Representation & during this noise of Indians, Ordered that no Masters of any Shipps or Vessells trading to this Province presume to export or carry away any of the Inhabitants thereof wthout particular leave and lycense first had & obtained for the same. Ordered that the thirteen men & two Officers this day agreed upon to be raised for the strengthening the Garrison & ifrontiers upon Potomock be forthwith raised accordingly and sent up to be appointed their Stations by the Honoble Coll. John Addison of Prince Georges County; the wch said men are to be raised as follows vizt Four out of Annarrundll County, three out of Calvert, three out of St Maries, and three out of Charles Counties. And that Richard Owen of Ann arrundell County be Captain to Comand part of the said men, and Giles Hill of St Maries County Lieutent to Comand another part thereof. hereby directing and Ordering that the Colonels of the said Counties take care to gett the said men raised wth all imaginable expedition, to be imprest for the said service wth their horses; but it Volunteers can be procured afterwards that then they be taken; and if wanting of armes & horses of their own that they be furnisht & equipt out of the Countrey armes & have horses also imprest, wth a suitable quantity of powder & ball; hereby signifying tht the said men will be allowed & paid out of the Publick for such their service perform'd for the Countrey. Ordered that (pursuant to the advice of the Honord the Justices and Grand Jury of the Provincial Court together wth the other Gentlemen called to be consulted about Indian affairs) the Colonel of each respective County do imediatly upon sight hereof raise & choose out of the Militia under their respective Comands (or any other persons not inlisted) the following men, in Order to the strengthening the ifrontiers of this Province in manner following; Vizt That Ann arrun dell County do raise forty five men, Calvert County forty, Prince Georges County twenty, Baltimore County fifteen, St
