                 176 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1696/7-98.

          

           Lib. H. D.     Indian Warr will not prove true. I would have you take

                 Care to observe the directions of the Law about divulging of

                 News concerning the Indians & tht you be Sure to keep all

                 yor men either at the ffort or Ranging; which I would have

                 you doe some times up the River to see if you Cant find their

                 Canoos or any Signs of making any. If you have any certain

                 Intelligence of Indians you are to give an Accot thereof to

                 the honrble Coll: John Addison (who is to send it to me, tht

                 you may not want one of yor Rangers) and to the inhabitants

                 in yor parts so tht they may be upon their Guards.

                   You are to Send to Capt George Mason the Mans Name,

                 tht told you this News about the Indians. I intend God

                 willing to be in yor parts very shortly & in the interim am

                 His Exncys Just now I recd: a Letter from Capt Brightwell

                 Letter to Coll Addison abt & inclosed is a Copy of it with my Answer to

                 Indians him, which I would have you dispatch to him by

                 this Ranger; but for the future if there should be any Occa-

                 sion of sending hither, I would not have you send by any of

                 the Rangers but by Some other Messinger; I would also have

                 you send to Capt Mason as from yor Self the Accot which

                 Capt Brightwell sent to me, as also tht which you sent to him,

                 whch I hope in God is not true; I hope in God that all will be

                 in quiet, but if not tht yor people will all be ready & they shall

                 not (God willing) want Assistance from

                                          Yor Affectionate ffriend

          

                 The inclosed I would have you send

                 over to Capt Mason tht it may be dispatcht

                 to his EXnCY Sr Edmund Andros, to whom

                 I send Copy of yor Letter to Brightwell of his to me.

                   If you have any further Accot concerning the Indians I

                 would have you send the same from time to time to him as

                 also Brightwell do it to him, & desire him to doe the like to

                 you tht an Accot thereof may be sent to Sr Edmund Andros.

                 Edrnd Andros Brightwell Comandr of his Mats Rangers on this

                 abt Indians &ca side of Potomock & inclosed is a Copy thereof as
