The Information of Thomas Robinson Esq.
This informant Saith Mr Tho: Rob- That upon the 16th of June (as he Remembers) insons infor- . - mation about he came to Philadelphia where he tht Night the Privateers waited upon Governr Markham & Shew'd him at Philadelphia &c: the Coiiiission & patent he had from the Earl of
Romney, in Relation to prizes, and told him that he heard there was one Robt Chinton, Edmund Lassell, and a Dutchman tht were in Prison, wch were Suspected to be of Every's Crew, saying the Goal was insufficient to keep them, therefore desired they might be better secur'd; who said they should tht night; The next morning Mr Cole the Landlord of the House where this informant lodged came up into his bed Chamber and told him that Robt Chinton & Edmund Lassell had broke Prison & were gone That abt Ten a Clock tht day he waited upon the Governr again and told him it was a very ill managed Business to let the two principal Criminalls about Town Escape after tht manner, who for answer said that he was neither Sheriff nor Goaler and that the County ought to be fin'd for letting the Goale be insufficient. That the same day or the next day after he went to the Prison to see the place where they were said to make their Escape and at the bottom of the Dore did see where there had been a board of about 14: inches long and 10: inches broad ript off; but could not possibly believe that men of that bulk could get through at such a place, especially Chinton, who is said to be a very ffat grosse man That the sd morning they broke prison the Govr issued out a hue & Cry to take them with a Promise (by the Bellman) of a Reward of ffive Pounds a peice to any one tht should Apprehend them. That in the Afternoon one p. 98 Hannah Witt came to this Informant & ffrancis Jones before whom she made Oath she had seen the sd Chinton and Lassell three times tht day among a parcell of Bushes near a place called the Centure in Philadelphia Chinton having a sword by his side, a pistell in one hand, another stuck in his girdle and a musket upon his Shoulder; one John Clapole Sheriff of Philadelphia County being then by told the Woman tht he was sure she was mistaken for that they were not there; whereupon this informant went to the Governr & -acquainted him with these matters and desired he might have his speciall warrant to Apprehend them seeing they were so nigh, to wch the Governr made Answer that he knew of noe business this
