By his Excy the Governor and Councill in Assembly
Iuly the 14th 1699.

The Board takeing into Consideration the dreadfull Acci-
dent that happened yesterday to the State house and the
great danger of burning thereof, Do recomend to the house
that four or five Small Water Engines and Twenty leather
Bucketts may be sent for by the prsent shipping which may be
hung up in the Court house and ready upon any such unhappy
Occasion which God prevent Signed per Order

The Board adjourned till the Afternoon

Post Meridiem

Came Capt Hoskins and Mr Bozmane for some of the Mem-
bers of this Board to Come down and see Mr Briscoe an
Elected Member for Charles County Sworne.
The honble Col Iohn Courts Sent to have him Sworne
The Councill adjourned untill 8 a Clock to Morrow Morning

Came from the house Col Thompson & Mr Ashman &
brought a Bill Impowering the Vestrymen to Assess their
parishioners to finish and repaire Churches &c read the first
time and will pass with Some Small Amendment
A Bill restreining the Extortions of Sherriffs and Deputy
Comissarys read the first time.
A Bill for Appeals and regulate.ing Writts of Errorread and
will pass with these Alterations, Vizt
1. Instead of Saying no Officer shall take any other ffees
on a Writ of Error &c then herein mentioned, it be said, these
officers hereafter mentioned, by reason the words no Officers
seem too Generall and includes the sherriffe Attorney and
Clerk of the Superior Court who by this Act have no ffees att
all Allowed them.
2. Where the Appeals and Writts of Error are from the
provinciall to the Governor and Councill are limitted to one
hundred pounds Sterl or 20000ls Tobba it be limitted to a less
Sume Vizt to 50l or 10000l of Tobba it seeming hard to the
Subject to debarr him the benefitt of the Law for any Sume
amounting to or Exceeding these latter Sums and which
