of the Council of Maryland, 1778-1779. 417

hear to Day by a Man from Virginia that the Enemy are
making Works at the Great Bridge; if true, it looks as if they
did not intend to leave us soon, or be up immediately. We
wish to give Orders for as many of the Militia, the nearest to
Baltimore, as you can arm, to hold themselves in Readiness to
march to Baltimore Town immediately on notice and you are
to give Orders for their March on Genl Buchanan's Request
without waiting for Directions from us. The 150 Arms &
Accoutriments sent from Balto to you last Spring, we imagine,
are at Frederick Town and in good Order: those and any
other that are there fit for use, we request you to send for
immediately and have them lodged at your House or where
else you may think more convenient, for arming the Militia as
they collect; if there's a Place more towards Baltimore where
they would be taken Care of, it would be better

Normand Bruce Esqr
Ll of Frederick County

[Council to W. Henry.]

In Council Annapolis 24th May 1779
Sir.
Mr William Merrit will deliver to you 30,000£ according to
your Request. We would not wish you to increase your
Purchase; the Quantity mentioned in your Estimate is fully
sufficient. The Flour, Shorts & Bran should not be within
Reach of the Enemy, by Water, as they are still in the Bay,
and though we have no Reason to believe, from their late
Movements, they are destined higher up, yet too much Caution
cannot be used to secure Provision of this Kind, you'll there-
fore let it remain at the Mills

[Jenifer to Gov. Johnson]

Philadelphia May 24th 1779.
Dear Sir
I have the pleasure of your Excellencys favor of the 21st
Congress have not received any later intelligence than what
you have communicated, which I am really surprised at, con-
sidering the distress that the inhabitants of the Lower part of
Virga must be in.
I am too sensible, not to feel the force of your observation
respecting Censure many are ready to find fault after events
