402 Journal and Correspondence

not mention the Price at which you expect the Flour, nor
where it lies; Mr Stevens says he believes that it is at the
Head of Hunting Creek; if you buy it, we wish to continue
there 'til further Orders. We believe the Quantity wanted
will be made up, at all Events, we would not have you exceed
£20 p Ct as much less as you can agree for. We are desired
to return a General Account by the first Day of next Month
to enable us to do it, mention to us as soon as possible, the
exact Quantity you agree for, where it is and the Price. It
must be ready by the 5th June as by that Time it may, perhaps,
be wanted and ordered to be removed. You will consider this
Purchase as closing your Commission

[Council to W. Hemsley.]

In Council Annapolis 19th May 1779
Sir.
We have just received your Letter of Yesterday. Our
Situation is such that we are not able to furnish Arms but by
sending Part of the Few, by much too few, we design for the
Defence of Baltimore Town & this Place Objects which the
Enemy must certainly have in View, if they came with any
Force up the Bay, in Preference to any other Parts of the
State. We see by Colo Bordley's Return of Arms he sent 15th
Apl 1778, by Capt Weeks, 50 Musquets with Bayonets, & 50
without, your Return is much short of that Number. We
have heard nothing of the Enemy's Movements since the
10th Inst when they took Portsmouth; we have had Vessels up
which left Tangiers yesterday Morning, they saw nothing in
the Bay; from their not coming up with so fair a wind as they
were favored with, we are in Hopes they do not intend it.
We shall be careful to communicate any Thing interesting as
soon as we hear of it. By the first of June we are desired to
make a Return of the Flour &ca purchased and where it lies.
We believe the Quantity demanded is procured and therefore
wish you and Colo Thompson, who be pleased to advise of it,
to stop purchasing and, with all Expedition, furnish us with
the State of your Purchases, that we may make the General
Return as requested. We hourly expect to receive Money to
settle all the Accounts our Treasuries will not bear further
Advances
We are &ca
Colo Wm Hemsley.
