[Council to D. Hughes.]
In Council Annapolis 3d April 1779
Sir.
You have herewith a Copy of a Letter from the War Office
dated the 25th of last Month and of its Inclosure from whence
you'll see we are called upon for a Company of Militia to
guard the Prisoners at Fort Frederick. It is absolutely
necessary that there should be a good Guard and we request
you to get a Guard of Militia ready to enter on Duty instead
of the Regular Troops. We are sorry for the Necessity of
calling out any of the Militia at this Time, it must be prejudial
to them and to the Public. If Men can be engaged for four
Months to perform this Service for a Bounty of sixty Dollars
and Continental Pay and Rations we will willingly and gladly
pay that Bounty and possibly, as the Militia in general are so
much interested in the Measure, we may with their Assistance
engage the Number or great Part of the Number wanted.
We wish you to exert your Endeavours for that Purpose;
perhaps some may be picked up in Frederick, the Militia on
Duty may be discharged as Men are engaged to fill their
Places. Should any Thing occur to you which you think may
tend in any Degree to ease the Militia, you'll be pleased to
mention it to us.
We are &ca
Danl Hughes Esqr
Lt of Washington County
