Witness that the Reverend John Montgomery hath lately been
in New York a City in Possession of the Enemy contrary to the
Act of Assembly in such case made and Provided.
Wherefore the Sheriff of Ann Arundel County on the 23d
Day of this Instant Jany was commanded by this Board to
arrest the said John Montgomery and him bring before this
Board or before some Judge or Justice that he might be dealt
with for the said Offence according to Law of which said
Warrant or Command no return hath been yet made to this
Board. You are therefore hereby commanded & required if
the said John Montgomery shall be found within your County,
and he shall not have been before arrested by the Sheriff of
Ann Arundel County on the said recited Warrant, that you
arrest and take the said John Montgomery and him immedi-
ately bring before this Board or before some Judge or Justice
that he may be dealt with for the said Offence according to
Law, and for your so doing this shall be your sufficient War-
rant and Authority

In Council 27th January 1779
Sir.
Major Howard has the charge of a considerable Sum of
Public Money for Camp; it was put into his Hands for a Safe
Conveyance, he then having a Detachment with him, but his
Detachment is gone foward; if he is not gone we request you
to send with him one of the Matross Officers and a Sergeant
armed to proceed with him to Camp or to Philadelphia only,
as Major Howard may judge proper, for we think it impru-
dent to risk the Money with a single Person. You will take a
Sergeant who can be depended on, and let their Business be
as little known as may be

Sir
Colo Smith tells us that your Detachment went off before
you and that you may probably not have been gone yet, nor
the Money for Genl Smallwood sent. The Reason of troub-
ling you with it was the Certainty of its being safe against a
