[Smallwood to Gov. Johnson.]

Camp Middlebrook 20th January 1779
Dear Sir
I have recieved your favour of the 18th December last and
your Requisitions shall be complied with immediately as I
recieve intimation of the Arival of the Cash and Clothing in
Philadelphia from our Delegates.
It gives me great pleasure that I shall now be enabled to
secure to my Country such of her nine months men, as are
disposed to remain in the Service, who otherwise upon being
discharged might be engaged by other States, and their service
lost to our own.
I have since I wrote you on the Ist Inst Inlisted and furlough'd
near one hundred of them out of my Brigade, who are marched
in detachments under proper Officers to such parts of the State,
where it may be most convenient to dismiss them to return to
their Respective Homes, with Instructions to rendezvous at a
particular time and place in the spring to be marched to Camp
under an Officer to join their Regiments respectively
I shall Continue to engage as many as I can, and such who
do not incline, or whose particular circumstances may not
Admit of entring the Service at a proper time shall be marched
in a body under an Officer, who shall be instructed to supply
Provision on their Rout, and discharge them, in such part of
the State as may be thought most elligible, to obviate their
falling thro' distress and want into the Service of other States
and being lost to ours.
