Hen: Den- Vpon Motion made by Henry Denton Clerk of this tons Motion abt allow- honrble Board that his Exncy and Honrs would please for a to take into their Consideration, a certain Petition Depty by him preferred in Councill, May last, relating to
being Ordered an Allowance for the maintenance of a DeptY Saying Mr Plater his Maty Receiver Genll could not as yet Whitehall comply with the former Ordr made therein, for want of the Sherriffs Returns; the sd Petition and Ordr following in these Words, Vizt
To his EXnCY ffrancis Nicholson Esq Capt Genll and Govr in Cheife of this province, and to the honrble his Mats Councill of the same &cca The humble Petition of Henry Denton Clerk of the sd Councill. Sheweth Hen: Den- That Yor Petr has (dureing the time of his Exe tons Petition & Ordr abt cuting this Trust) been put to great expence and allowance Charge in keeping Clerks for the quick and Con stant Dispatch of all publick business required to be Whitehall Sent to the Severall Counties of the province Vizt Proclama tions Ordrs of Councill and other Matters incident to his Office; which (dureing this time of Warr) have been very Numerous, besides the keeping a particular Register of all those Concerns. That the Journalls of the Councill Proceedings constantly writ out (to be sent for England) are many, for all wch your Petitionr has only allowed him from the Assembly, the Annuall Sallary of Twelve Thousand pounds of Tobacco, and that per haps Ordered him in Counties where little Can be got for it, besides the trouble of seeking after it: And inasmuch as your petr finds the Clerk of the Councills business soe great that he Cannot possibly attend it to give due Complyance,without the assistance of a DeptY does therefore most humbly pray this honrble Board that some way be found to have an annuall Settlemt allowed him, either in money or Tobacco, for the maintaining such a DeptY and as in duty bound he shall pray &cca
