Lib. H. D. cill of this province next Adjacent to the place where the sd Jeremi: shall be taken, who is hereby Required to Examine the premisses and take good Security of the Jeremi: to procure the Boy from Carolina into this province with all expedition and to be delivered to the sd Tho: Ennalis in Ordr to his pas- sage home again and if the sd Jeremiah shall refuse to give p. 370 such security that he be Recommited to the Custody of such Officer again there to Remain till he procure the sd boy to be brought here as aforesd or give such Security as aforesd for all wch this Shall be your Warrant Given under my hand and Seal this 9th day of July in the Year of our Lord 1696. ffr: Nicholson
July the 7th, 1696. Presented by Capt Oldton the following Return in writing which was Read Vizt To his Exncy ffrancis Nicholson Esq his mats Capt Genll of Maryland &Ca According to an Ordr of yoT Exncy to Thomas Roberts to be Leivtent under the Conduct of John Oldton by your Exncy appointed Capt of the Rangers of Baltemore County: the motives and Reasons which Yor Exncy Requires to the sd Ordr are as thus. That the sa Thomas Roberts is altogether incapable of the management of the sd Office, and that the persons that are under my Conduct say, that they will not be Commanded by Whitehall the sd Thomas Roberts, he being by them taken to be a mo ross sort of a Person and altogether unwilling to be by him Comanded. These Reasons and Objections I hope may weigh with your Exncy and therefore I humbly Pray the Liberty of the Choice of Tobias Stanborough to be my Leivtnt which doubt not but your will admit off, when seen, being the needfull that Offers from. Ordered tht Copy of the above Return be sent to the sd Whitehall Thomas Roberts for him to make answer thereto with all Con venient Speed. Ordered that the honrble Coll: John Addison furnish Coll: Ninian Beal with as much Amunition as he finds he shall have Occasion for. It being Ordered in Assembly that the Choptico and po munky Indians &Ca Should (dureing this time of warr) be Whitehall under the Emperor of Piscattoway; Ordered that a Commission pursuant thereto be prepared to pass the Broad Seal.
