D. inconvenience vpon himself, and therefore Ordered that the said LLewellin (with what possible expedition he can) come vp & finish at the Port of Annapolis the Proceedings aforesd pursuant to former Ordr The honoble Coll John Counts Letter of Excuse for not corn- Whitehall ing to Councill, read & admitted oft. Produced & by Ordr read certain proceedings (in relation to the Broad Seal of the province) had & taken before his EXaCY the Governr the sixth day of December last, which fol low in these words, Vizt
December the 6th 1695. Proceedings Came before his Excellency Mr John ffreernan touching Coll Jowles Register in Chancery and his Excell, producing vnto &ca him a couple of instrumts a subpena & an injunction in Chancery, the which he had produced & delivered vnto his Exceli some ifour or ffive Nights ago vnder the Broad Seall of the Province, and being then by his Exncy examin'd whether the sd two Instruments were perfect & intire without any blancks left in the same before they passed the Broad Seal, did then Answer & confess they were not perfect, and being asked the same question now, his Exncy shewing him the two Seals which he tore from the sd instruments, the said ffreeman made the same Answer, and his Exncy therevpon burnt the sd Seals. The honoble Coll Henry Jowles (Keeper of the Broad Seal) delivering vnto Majr Edward Dorsey, one of the Commis sionrs in Chancery, the Broad Seal of the province, by him to be kept pursuant to the Ordr of Councill; Ordered that the sd Majr Dorsey keepe the sd Seal secure, and that he apply it no instrument but what is Authentick & according to the Rules & practice of his Mats high Court of Chancery & that the Reg ister of the sd Court take notice accordingly. Ordered that the honoble Coll Henry Jowles make answer in writing what he has to say in defence of himself for taking p. 263 away the Broad Seal of the Province out of Town with him con trary to an Ordr of Councill and for carrying away the Origi nall Laws made last Sessions of Assembly, contrary to his Excell Orders; and that he produce such his defence to the Councill next Meeting, and how he came to leave a spare Broad Seal with Stephen Blatchford to put to a Copy of the aforementioned Laws, the which sd Seal his Exncy now burnt.
