At a Councill held at the Port of Annapolis the 14th day of Lib. H. D, August in the Seaventh Yeare of the Reign of our Soveraign Lord King William the third &ca Auiioq Domi: 1695. Present His Exncy Francis Nicholson Esqr Capt Genll &ca Coll Henry Jowles Coll George Robotham The Honoble Coll John Addison John Courts Esqr Tho: Brooke Esqr Esqr Poveys Lettr de- His Exncy producing a Letter by him Recd from claring the the Rt honoble John Povey Esqr one of the Clks of Death of the Queen & his Mats most honoble privy Councill & DeptY Secre Ordr there. tary of the plantacon Office, Dated 9th of March last past, giving an Accot of the great & irreparable Loss Whitehall proceedings Recd by the death of her late Maty Queen Mary (of &Ca ever blessed & Glorious Memory) Ordered there upon that proclamation issue to give notice thereof & that for the future all manner of Writs process & proceedings, in the severall Courts & Offices of this Province issue & rune in the Name of King William the third &ca The Royall Lettr of her late Maty (of ever blessed & glori ous memory) unto me directed of the 22th of August 1694: Vizt that a Quota or part of the Militia of this Province not exceeding 160 Men (but noe Ordrs that the said Men shall be paid & Maintained by this Province nor be furnished wth armes or Amunition, neither do I find by yr Lettr that you expect Wee should pay or furnish them) be the Measure of Assistance to be given the Province of New Yorke; but your Exncy Writes for Officers as well as the Men her Maty is graciously pleased in the same Letter to Order as follows, Vizt Wee having also given express directions to our said Governr or Comander in Chief of our sd Province of New p. 192 Yorke not to demand or Require at any time a greater part of the said Quota or other Assistance from our said Province of Maryland than he shall in proportion demand or require of the respective Quotas of the rest of the Adjacent Colonies, but you have not given me any intimation that you have sent for the whole Quota's from the rest of his Mats Colonies or Provinces in these Northern parts of America nor whether you intend to invade the Common Enemy the French, or expect to be invaded by them; for if you do the latter I shall be Obliged for the safety of this his Mats Province to raise a greater number of Men to guard our ifrontiers, wch are great
