   			MARYLAND MILITIA IN CONTINENTAL SERVICE IN 1777.


 		RESOLVES OF CONTINENTAL CONGRESS 9 DECEMBER, 1776.


	"Resolved, That expresses be immediately sent to the committees
of the counties of Coecil, Baltimore, Hartford, and Frederick, in Mary
land, requesting that they apply, without delay, to the militia of their
respective counties, and send forward, immediately, for the defence of
the city of Philadelphia, and the reinforcement of general Washington's
army, as many troops as possible, informing the said committees that
some assistance, in the way of arms, may be furnished here, to such as
have no arms to bring with them."


  	RESOLVES OF CONTINENTAL CONGRESS 21 JANUARY, 1777.


	"Resolved, That it be recommended to the council of safety of
Maryland, to request the militia of Hartford, Baltimore, C"cil, and such
other counties of their state as they shall think proper, to march, as
soon as possible, to reinforce general Washington, giving directions
that each company consist of not less than 36 privates, under the com
mand of two commissioned officers, and that a field-officer take the
command of every four companies."
	A large number of men marched under the Resolves of Dec. 9th,
1776, especially from Frederick, Baltimore and Harford Counties, but
no rolls of these companies, giving date of service, can be found.
Johnson's and Buchanan's entire divisions were ordered out.
