during the War of the American Revolution, 1775-83. 609 And be it enacted, That the governor and council be authorised and requested to appoint and commission a proper number of brave, experienced, and able seamen and officers, to command the said galley and sloop or schooner And be it enacted, That a company of one hundred men be imme diately raised to serve as marines on board the said galley and sloop or schooner, and occasionally on board the said barges or row-boats; and that the governor and council be authorised and requested to appoint and commission one captain and two lieutenants to command the said company of marines, and to direct such officers to procure by enlistment as soon as possible, the said number of healthy able bodied men, including two sergeants and two corporals, to serve in such com pany for the term of three years, unless sooner discharged. And be it enacted, That if any officer, soldier, or marine, shall lose a limb, or be otherwise maimed or hurt, so as to be rendered incapable of procuring a livelihood, such officer, soldier, or marine, shall be entitled to receive the same provision and support as is or shall hereafter be established by this state for its officers and soldiers in the service of the United States." MARYLAND ACTS-MAY, 1781. A Supplement to the act for the defense of the bay. "Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That for the immediate defense of the bay,.....the governor and council be authorised and empowered to purchase, at such price as they may think reasonable, the galley now in Baltimore-town if on examination by such proper person as they may appoint, she shall be found fo be sound and fit for the service and that they have power to contract for the building another galley, agreeable to the act of assembly of the last session, and cause her to be completely fitted and manned at the public expense; both of which gallies to be employed in such manner as the governor and council shall from time to time direct, for the defense of our bay and the protection of the trade thereof; Be it enacted, That the Governor and Council be authorised and empowered to contract for any number of barges, not exceeding eight, that they may think necessary for the defense of this bay, and to cause them to be completely fitted and manned."
