during the War of the American Revolution, 1775-83. 337 And be it enacted, That the lieutenant of the county, and the several field officers, together with the commissioners of the tax in each county, are hereby required, to meet . . . on the fifteenth day of July next, to class all the property last assessed in their respective counties into as many equal classes as there may be men wanted for such county, and each class shall, within ten days thereafter, find an able bodied recruit to serve during the war, or take up a deserter enlisted to serve during the war. And be it enacted, That all recruits, raised in virtue of this act, shall be carried before the lieutenant of the county, or some field officer in which the recruits are or shall be raised, to pass muster. And, Whereas this assembly has proposed to the commander in chief to raise a regiment of five hundred and thirty one men, to join the army in lieu of the militia required from this state: Be it enacted, That the governor and council shall have full power and authority, upon notice that the commander in chief accepts the proposal, to order the following proportions of the said number of five hundred and thirty one men, to be raised by the several counties (in addition to the number by the first part of this act apportioned) and the governor and council shall appoint such officers as they may think proper and necessary to command such regiment, and the first five hundred and thirty one men which are raised shall be incorporated into a regiment and forthwith sent forward to join the army under the commander in chief." "An ACT to expedite the raising an additional battalion of regulars. Whereas his excellency general Washington and the committee of co-operation have thought proper to accept the proposal made by the legislature of this state, to raise an additional battalion of regulars in lieu of the two thousand two hundred and five militia, at first requested to be furnished by this state, provided the same be raised so as to reach the place of rendezvous by the last of July, and it is thereupon become necessary to expedite the raising the said battalion: Be it enacted, by the General Assembly of Maryland, That the lieu tenants and field officers of the respective counties, shall immediately on receipt of this act, and of the acts of assembly passed this session, entitled, An act to procure recruits to complete the battalions of this |
