security he would release him, whereunto the said Stavely

answered that as he was a Justice or Conservator of the peace
he ought not to become security for any person that was
guilty of the breach of the peace; The said Stavely also saith
that he has been credibly informed and hath heard it reported
by severall persons that Mr Inglish should tell them that
(whereas they had sett their hands to a petition against him
and were thereupon summoned down before my Lord and
Councill,) if they would but come to his house and acknowl-
edge the wrong they had dune him, he would excuse them from
goeing downe.
Mr Joseph Hopkins saith that he was then present at Court
when Edward Inglish Sheriff of the County attached the
bodyes of Philip Holeager One of the Justices and of Swithen
Wells Clark of the Court, that the other Justices thereof would
have thereupon adjourned the Court but the Clerk told them
he was then a prisoner and uncapable of sitting there neither
would he sitt by which meanes for want of a Clark the Court
brake up without adjourning. He likewise saith that since
his Ldsp had made Mr Edward Inglish high Sheriff of Caecil
County he had behaved himself very high and arrogantly to
the people there not sticking to say that since his Lspp had
given him the Comand of the County the people must and
should love him and feare him, and that he hath heard that
Mr Inglish or his Subsheriff should threaten and give out
publickly that when they went about to Receive the Rents and

leavys they would meete with some particular persons that
had sett their hands to a petition and they would strip draw
and tumble their Tobacco sufficiently; He likewise heard it
reported that Mr Inglish should say if those people that had
subscribed would but come to him and Acknowledge they had
done him wrong and give under their hands for it he would
excuse them from comeing downe.
George Starton saith that he had some Actions depending
against Mr Inglish in the County Court which he could never
bring to a termination He as Sheriff still circumventing and
putting off the Courts which was the reason of his subscribeing
the petition.
Ebenezer Blakstone saith in substance that it has been the
common practice of Mr Inglish to huff and hector at the whole
County and he generally proclaimes that he cann out witt the
whole County.
Richard Pullen saith that he haveing bought a Plantation of
my Ld and being in possession thereof, Mr Inglish came one
day and broke open a Chamber doore in his house, and seized
the goods that were there, and the said Pullen demanding of
him pay for storeage, Mr Inglish putt him off slightingly
