Charles Absolute Lord and Propry of the Provinces of Mary-
land & Avalon Lord Baron of Baltemore &ca To all the
Inhabitants & people of Maryland, and all others to whom
these prsents shall come or any waies concern Greeteing.
Whereas our present affaires doe require our leaveing this our
Province for some moneths, and that dureing our absence out
of our said Province wee have thought fitt and requisite, the
chiefe Comand should be in our Deare Sonn Benedict Leonard
Calvert Esqr

Know Yee therefore that wee have Given
Granted and by these prsents doe give and Grant
unto our sd Deare Sonn the Office of Lievetenant
Genll Chiefe Captain, Chiefe Governor and Com-

mandr and Chiefe Admirall both by Sea and Land of our
Province of Maryland, and of all our Islands Territories and
Dominions whatsoever, and of all and singular our Castles
fforts ffortresses ffortifications munitions Shipps and Navyes in
our said Province, Islands Territories and Dominions aforesd

And him the said Benedict Leonard Calvert Wee doe make
ordeine and constitute Lievetenant Generall Chiefe Captain,
and Chiefe Admirall both by Sea and Land, Chiefe Governor
and Commandr of our said Province Islands Territories and
Dominions, and of all the Castles fforts Navyes, Ships, places,
and things aforesaid bythese prsents. To have hold occupy
enjoy & exercise the said Office of Lievetenant Genll Chiefe
Captain and Chiefe Admirall Chiefe Governor and Chiefe
Commandr as aforesaid with the apprtences unto our sd Deare
Sonn Benedict Leonard Calvert by his Deputies in our absence
by us to be appointed; And Wee doe likewise give and grant
unto our sd Deare Sonn full power and Authority dureirrg the
time of his haveing holding & enjoying the said Office before
mentioned by his Deputies and Officers by us to be appointed
to leavy Muster and traine all sorts of men of what Condition
soever, or wheresoever borne in our said Province and
Dominions for the time being remaineing: And in case of
Insurrections assaults or approaching of any Enemy or Ene-
mies, Pirate or Pirats, or other Robbers to make warr, and to
pursue such Enemy or Enemies Pirates or Robbers as well by
Sea as Land, and to Vanquish and take them, and being soe
taken to putt them to death by the Law of Warr or to save
them at his pleasure. And by his Deputies by us to be
appointed to doe all and every thing which unto the charge
and Office of a Captain Gen" of an Army or Admirall of a
ffleete belongeth.
