the same being a thing of another nature then confirming a
peace wth Indians which I cannot apprehend soe difficult as
rendred the neighbourly affection this Collony Beares to yor
Province hath always and shall induce a greater readiness to
serve them, then any yor threats can obleige nor cann they be
received kindly, not expecting such unsavory Returnes Espe-
cially from yor selves whom yor Capacity place and Circum-
stances might have kept to more moderate Terms, I prsume
to knowe my duty and shall alwayes be accomptable for the
same to my superiors and duly discharge my selfe accordingly
And now hope you will proceed to yor busines pursuant to yor
Commission And if any thing to add relateing to the piscatta-
ways or other yor freind Indians may Act therein as shall
thinke fitt, wee not Conceiving our selves to be obleiged or
Ingaged for them, but have ordered you all Assistance and
advice possible which may freely accept from those in place
without any apprehentions or lealosies, or that any thing but
his Maties Service, and prservation of his Subjects is designed
and intended by,

Answere to Brockholls

Albany July 11th 1682.
Hon'd Sr"
Yor kind letter of the 30th of June (for which very thankfull)
came to our hand on thursday night last; and the next morn-
ing Reced yors Dated the 4th of July: Sr how groundless
soever misinformacon may have rendred our expresses of
Maryland to you, Wee have good reason to be very gladd,
that wee have not beene guilty of the neglect for besides that

in this case to be mistaken is a less Evill, then to be defective,
wee have continuall informacon of the Indians being gonn
downe into our Country, from the severall Troopes comeing to
this Towne, delivered to us from such mouths, which as yett
wee have noe cause to Suspect, and whose names wee for noe
other reason to conceale then their owne safety, against such
threats as wee heare are made against them, but Sr to make it
Certaine to you wee have desired Mr Slightenhorse to give us
this inclosed Certificate who being Recomended to us from
yor Selfe as a person fitt to make use of us this affaire, for his
integrety, faithfullnes, and good knowledge in their language
wee hope will both find Credence wth you and protection
against any that may maligne him for those honest iust ser-
vices he hath or may doe us from whome he receives his
