Lib. R. Indian did belong to the Mattawoma ffort and was seene by
the subscriber at the Zachaiah ffort the 1 8th of this instant
when the peace was made, and since made his Escape as he
saieth.

p. 205 Then issued by ordr of his Ldspp and Councill these follow-
ing Instructions to Capta Brandt viz.

Instructions for Capta Randolph Brandt directing the Exe-
cution of his Commission to treate with the Northern Indians
that make inroades in this Province.
Since we have certain Intelligence that there hath been
tenn Susquehannohs and tenn Sinniquos dispatch'd from this
greate party downe Pottomock with a Prisoner for their
guide to trye what Indians they cann surprise, and since we
have certain Intelligence that where the Susquehannohs
meete either Indian or English they give noe Quarter. It is
too apparent that the Northern Indians refuseing to treate
with Captn Brandt at the Zachaiah ffort is out of a designe to
watch an oportunity to doe what mischiefe they cann To pre-
vent therefore (if possible) more murder of his Majesties Sub-
jects You are
1: ffirst to Demand Tenn Pascattoway Indians for your
guides that soe you may employ them as your Scoutes to find
out these Northern Indians in order to treate with them.
2: You are to secure these Indians from all violence other
then what may be offered them as they are single when out
upon discovery
3: If the forreigne Indians assault you, you are to defend
yourself after the best manner you cann, and if overpowered
to make as honble a Retreate as you may the number of the
Enemys considered.
4: If you come to treate with the said Indians, you are to
make noe peace with them but what shall equally include us
and the Zachiah or Pascattoway Indians, the Mattawomans
Choptico and all other Indians Inhabiting within this Province
in peace with us and under our protection
5: In case you meete with the Northern Indians, and that
they refuse to treate or doe not upon treaty conclude a peace
with you. You are to lett them know that we have had sev-
erall murders committed of late, that we doe know there was
tenn Susquesahannohs and tenn Sinniquos sent downe Potto-
mock with a Pascattoway prisoner for their guide, with ordr to
goe to the mouth of Pottomock and soe to goe up to the North-
ward which number of men have been discovered in severall
