Mattapony 26th 1680:
Gentn
This serves to advise of the Receipt of Coll Taylors Letter
of the 24th instant with the Inclosed from Coll George Wells
directed to his Lspp: and this Day produced and read in Coun-
cill, by whose ordr this may give you both to undrstand that
your proceedings therein & breakeing open the said Letter
from Coll Wells hath been noe waies approoved off by his Lspp:
and his Councill who conceive themselves most neerely con-
cerned and ought to have the first peruseall, Wherefore for
the future you are Desired to give all speedy Conveyance to
all publick Lettrs without adventuring to breake any open
without ordrs as you have done this, but that you give way to
his Lspp: and his Councill (who are to give ord" in all publick
affaires) to have the first view and insight into the Letters and
Papers thereunto relateing. Whereof you are to take due
Cognizance. Signed p ordr

At wch place his Lspp: recd: a Lettr from Capta Randolph
Brandt of Charles County the contents whereof are as fol-
loweth viz.

In obedience to yor Lspps Commands of the 23th instant have
communicated the Last ordr of Councill both to the Emperor
and greate men of Pascattoway as also to the King and greate

men of Mattawoman, Mr John Stone appointed to conferr
with them, doe say that the Mattawomans will not remoove
but will Defend their Interest to their utmost power, and when
they can hold out noe longer, they will thrust themselves
amongst the English; they alsoe say they are become Ene-
mies to the Susquehannohs and all other Indians through our
meanes and for that reason will not leave us; They are also
much concerned for their Indian killed at Capt Aspinolls,
what they alleadge is that a boate arrived out of Virginia at
said Aspinolls with some liquor & other goods, whereupon
the said Aspinoll gave notice to the King of Mattawoman
