286 Proceedings of the Council of Maryland, 1678-1679.
Lib. R. a distressed condition, the Inhabitants there about affrighted
are remooveing & remooved from the said head of the River,
and I having noe ordr for the raiseing of men upon such
expedicon humbly desire yor Lspp to Signifie your pleasure in
the prmisses with convenient Speed, in the meane time have
ordred that the Inhabitants in those parts be very carefull of
themselves and that as soone as your Lspp shall be pleased to
send any ordr for their assistance that they shall have knowl-
edge thereof soe Craving yor Lspps gracious pardon for this
presumption, Remaine yor Lspps obedient Servtt

At wch time was pduced by his Lspp and read to the board
a Letter from Capt Randolph Brandt concerning the Pascat-
toway Indians according to his Lspps ordrs to said Brandt of the
17th instant.
The said Letter followeth in these words viz.

Rtt Honble
Yor Lspps Commands of the 17th instant have Communi-
cated to the Emperor and greate men of Piscattoway who
seemes to be very thankfull for the Ammunition yr Lspp is
pleased to tendr them, I likewise acquainted them with yor
Lspps pleasure in remooveing them to the Anticokes, and doe
find them very ready and willing to remoove thither or any
where your Lspp shall appoint they also Offer if yr Lspp will

p. 114 ordr the neighbouring Indians (viz) Mattawomans, Chopticos
&c: up to Piscattoway they will keepe their ground & main-
taine their ffort against their Enemies, or otherwise if yr Lspp
will appoint a small party of English to be at their ffort for
the security of their wives and Children they shall then bee
encouraged to stay and make Corne, it is generally thought
the Pascattoway Indians may draw the Mattawomans over
with them to the Anticokes. I have sent James Smallwood
on this message who is able to give yor Lspp a full relation of
this affaire, whom I made vse off as Interpreter in the pres-
ence of Mr William Chandler. The Emperor & greate men
tells me of an Indian of theirs killed by the English at Capt
Aspinalls about Tenn Daies agoe wch they have lately dis-
